Michael Stern, Guest Conductor Tucson Symphony Orchestra |
THE TOP NINE reasons to be @ TCC Music Hall @ 2:00 P.M. (or1:00 P.M.) on Sunday, 7 April 2019
9) TSO Guest Conductor, MICHAEL STERN, the esteemed Music Director of the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, is a dedicated, deep-thinking, passionate, and articulate proponent and practitioner of musical art at its highest level. His pre-concert talk (one hour beforehand) shows a director intimately familiar with the music, the composers' personal lives, and the concurrent social and political forces affecting the work of these great artists. He backed up his knowledge and passion with great vision and skill guiding the TSO to excellent performances of this unusual program.
8) The BRAHMS 'SCHICKSALSLIED' (Song of Destiny) is masterly symphonic choral writing; beautifully balanced, in Brahms generous, mature harmonic language, and deeply expressive.
7) You need a midday break from all of your Spring GARDENING chores and duties!
6) STRAVINSKY's 'Symphony of Psalms', like each of his mature works, is completely original in style and content. Here, to fully integrate the choral and instrumental elements, the orchestra contains no high strings (violins or violas), and many extra high woodwinds. This music is constantly "walking", yet awakens and strides in a spiritual plane untrodden.
5) The TUCSON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is in excellent form. The level of skill and dedication to their individual crafts is high and well-supported, and their poise and ability in collaboration is outstanding. They are a joy to watch work, and to hear live.
4) The SUPER BLOOM of Spring flowers all over the Old Pueblo and surrounding mountains will still be there for several more weekends!
3) The TUCSON SYMPHONIC CHORUS is one of Tucson's prized artistic treasures; a top notch performing group, under the direction of Dr. Bruce Chamberlain, for over two decades now -- always a treat for your spirit and soul.
2) You can hike SABINO CANYON in the morning, and still make the Matinee!
1) SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2, is striking in every regard. Often lingering on its carefullly crafted orchestral sonorites, the pacing of its dramatic dialog is a singular revelation. Its second movement is a picturesque dream sequence like no other. The finale, a brooding resistance, climaxing in a cathartic triumph, overcoming all obstacles, is deeply moving; an exhilirating close to a sprawling drama. As Maestro Stern describes it, and the TSO delivered it: this music is "achingly beautiful"...
